I love the interactivity and the tactile feel of play. I have all kinds of gadgets for work and personal use, but the Sifteo cubes are in a class of their own: I couldn't put them down the whole day I got 'em. I bought two sets: one for me, and one for my daughter. I think they make a great gift for an adult (I'm 35), or for a child. My daughter is fascinated by the concept of little cubes that know how to "touch each other" or how they "talk to each other." Doesn't matter how she describes it, she's excited about an educational game (she loves her Sifteo Scrabble) and she's excited about something scientific. Mission accomplished!Despite my clear enthusiasm about the product (no, I don't work for Sifteo), there is one thing I wish were done differently. The cubes require a live connection to a PC to work, which sometimes is limiting (what if we're not around to setup my daughter's cubes?) But no matter, I would still buy them just the same, given... He has never seen it before. The moment he saw it, he said it's like an mini ipad. My son is a "heavy" ipad user, he plays apps on the ipad all the time. At first I was skeptical that he would be interested at the little cubes. To my surprise, he fell in love with it immediately, and it is easy to learn how to use. He followed the "Getting Started" game and he was off to play all the games, even those that are for older children. I find that the sifteo differs from the ipad games in allowing the user to, not only practice their tactile skills, but also enforce their spatial reasoning and logic by having to switch around or rotating the cubes. Even more surprising is that my 11 years old and my 15 years old all have fun playing the sifteo with the games they choose, and found them to be of age-relevant difficulty. I thought the concept was great so once they were out in production I naturally ordered (mostly because I have a 3yo who I thought would benefit from the interactivity). Only downside so far is that there are very few applications but figure that to change as the product gets more consumer adoption. |
